'Tis the season!! Each holiday season, I choose a foundation to support with the gift of giving. This year, I have chosen the Veritas Academy in the town of Ikorodu, Nigeria. This organization was brought to my attention by my close friend and colleague, Dr. Leah Cobb-Snodgrass who serves as the Chair of Behavioral Health for the Lincoln Memorial University - DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM). Founded by one of her first-year medical students, Emmanuel Okenye, since July 2013 Veritas Academy has provided primary and secondary education to children in one of the poorest towns in Nigeria. In Ikodoru, many have a daily income of less than one dollar, children are unable to go to school because they beg in the streets to support their families, and there is greater than 90% unemployment. A donation of only $5 would literally exceed the income that 5 families earn in a day. Emmanuel and his wife are supporting this organization with their own funds, as he works his way through medical school. Last year, Veritas Academy served 38 children. Knowing how far a dollar will stretch for these children, I was compelled to not only give my dollars, but also to ask for yours. All donations will go to support the immediate needs of the school including reading books, meals, science and lab equipment etc. If you are so moved, please click DONATE NOW button below to make a contribution. I will send all funds to the Veritas Academy c/o LMU-DCOM International Medical Society. If you prefer to send your donation directly, please make checks payable to LMU-DCOM, write "International Medical Society - Veritas Academy" in the memo section and send it to: LMU-DCOM. 544 Shewannee Rd. Harrogate, TN 37752.
